Welcome to the first blog of the new decade!
January started with a holiday – yes, we closed the shop for a week; the first time in over 7 years! It was a much needed break and Stan (our mascot, pictured) thoroughly enjoyed himself! We visited Martyn’s mum in Durham for a surprise 80th birthday party on 3rd January and we also visited Ellie’s mum in Gloucester for a surprise 75th birthday meal on 5th January!
We returned safe and sound and reopened the shop on Thursday 9th. However, our post holiday spirits were dashed on Saturday 11th when the flat above the shop sprung a leak and caused part of our ceiling to come down! It’s a good job we haven’t finished our renovations yet!
However; in other news:
Our refillery area is going from strength to strength, thanks to articles in various local magazines and papers and the support of local groups and food outlets who have been buying from us for a long time. Can you believe we’ve been doing this for over 4 years and folk are only just catching on! Ellie is looking into getting the refills onto the website (which she is currently updating) so that folk can pre-order a refill and collect it in store later … watch this space!
The Community Bunting Project has begun! This is a HETI initiative (Huntly Ethical Trading Initiative) which aims to make bunting which can be used for events in and around the Huntly area. It is to replace the previous community bunting which went missing and has been made from a mixture of fairtrade certified cotton and material which has been donated in to us specifically for the project. A team of volunteers have been busy planning, cutting material, sewing up and ironing streams of material into very pretty bunting which will shortly be used for the first time! We’ll bring you an update (and hopefully some pics) in our next blog.
Winter Wellness Aromatherapy Workshop: The first of a planned series of aromatherapy workshops for this year went well. The next one is all about keeping your skin well during the winter months and is already full!
Beginner Crochet Workshop: Ellie got back into running her crochet workshops. This one was for beginners and a group of happy hookers each went home with a completed granny square – look out, they’ll be blankets about!
Animals for Australia: Our shop acted as a local drop-off point for items made for the animals rescued from the devastating bush fires in Australia. We were totally amazed with the amount of items handed in to us and our heart-felt thanks goes out to all who gave their time for these animals in need. We drove all the items through to the Aberdeen hub on Saturday 26th and they were very gratefully received by Polly’s partner who was very surprised at how much there was. Well done to everyone!
Moral Fibres Charity Knitting Club: We had our first meet of the year and was a good catch-up with tales of the festive season’s antics. Several bags of finished items were taken by Jo to be sent off to local charities. Our next meet is Monday February 24th.
We are hosting the HETI AGM on Monday 3rd February from 7pm. If you’re interested in getting involved in helping with their ethical community events please come along – there’s always cake!
We have more events and workshops lined up for next month. It’s also the start of Fairtrade Fortnight so we’re planning lots of chocolately themed things!
With January 31st looming, many of our customers have been asking what Brexit will mean for us? It’s a question on lots of minds right now and the subject of many conversations over the past few weeks. Well, we don’t know what will happen, but whatever comes from it we hope that 2020 will be a good year for everyone.
